Can I get a Tax Credit for Buying a Tesla in the U.S.?

Purchasing a Tesla, or any other eligible electric vehicle in the United States may allow you to receive the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, but you must pay attention to the following IRS requirements:

✔ Limited timeframe: You must sign the purchase contract and make payment on or before September 30, 2025 to qualify.

✔ Placed in service: The vehicle must be placed in service as soon as you take delivery. It must be used primarily in the U.S. for your own and not for resale

✔ Dealer reporting: At the time of delivery, the seller must provide both you and the IRS with the information about your vehicle's qualifications.

How to claim the credit:

· You may choose to transfer the credit to the dealer at the time of purchase to directly reduce the price and report the information when filing your annual tax return

· Or, if you do not transfer it, you can claim the credit yourself when filing your annual tax return by completing the required IRS forms.

Credit amounts:

· New vehicles: You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 depending on the IRS rules.

· Used vehicles: If purchased from a licensed dealer for $25,000 or less, you may qualify for a credit equal to 30% of the sale price, up to a maximum of $4,000.

USCPA Sophie Luo (羅霞) reminds you that this credit can only reduce your tax liability for that tax year. Any excess credit is nonrefundable and cannot be carried forward to future tax years.
