How to Write a Check to Pay U.S. Taxes?
There are several ways to pay your U.S. taxes — such as direct pay from a U.S. bank account, credit card payment, or mailing a check. If you cannot use the IRS online payment system or your payment was rejected, mailing a check is a reliable option. For those without a U.S. bank account, you can use a bank draft (money order) issued by your local bank.
✍️ Example: Paying $1,250 for Your 2025 Individual Tax Return (Form 1040)
📌 Pay to the Order of:
👉 United States Treasury
(Do NOT write “IRS” or “Internal Revenue Service”)
📌 Amount:
👉 Write both numbers and words:
$1,250.00
US DOLLARS ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONLY
📌 Memo:
👉 Include your SSN or ITIN, tax year, and form number:
SSN 123-45-6789
2025 Form 1040
📌 Signature:
👉 Sign your name exactly as it appears on your tax return.
When mailing your payment, remember to place the check or money order on top of your paper tax return, but do not staple them together. Before sending, take clear photos of the front and back of your check for your records, and always use a trackable mailing service such as Certified Mail, DHL, or FedEx to ensure safe delivery.
