What Is Form 1040-X?

Form 1040-X (Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) is used to correct a previously filed tax return, such as Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.
If you have already filed your tax return and later discover any mistakes—such as:

  • Missing a 1099 form
  • Leaving out foreign income
  • Forgetting deductions or tax credits
  • Selecting the wrong filing status
  • Needing to add forms like 2555, 1116, 8949, 8621, etc.

—you must file Form 1040-X to resubmit the corrected return.

  • Earned Income Tax Credit
  • Education credits (AOTC / LLC)
  • Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116)

3. Incorrect Filing Status

For example:

→When You Do Not Need Form 1040-X

The following situations do not require an amended return:

  • Address change → Use Form 8822 instead
  • Incorrect bank information → Wait for the IRS to automatically reject the direct deposit
  • Situations where the IRS recalculates the amount automatically
    (e.g., Recovery Rebate Credit adjustments)
