How to determine a Long-Term Resident of USA?

You are a long-term resident if you have been a green card holder in at least 8 calendar years of the last 15 tax years. For example, you had green card on 12/31/2013 and you abandon your green card on 01/01/2020. Although you have been had green card for only 6 years and two days, the calendar years cross 2013, 14 ,15 ,16 ,17 ,18 ,19 ,20 which are 8 calendar years.

USCPA Sophie Luo (羅霞) reminds you that if you want to abandon your green card, you should do it as soon as possible before you become a long-term resident. Once you are a long-term resident who has abandoned your green card, you may be subject to the expatriation tax.
