What is a PIN for U.S. taxes?

The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number issued by the IRS to taxpayers in the U.S. to prevent others from filing taxes using your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

→ Will you need it when filing taxes?
✔ If the IRS issues you an IP PIN, you must use it when filing your taxes.
Without it, you may not be able to e-file, and even paper filing could be delayed.
✔ If the IRS has not assigned you an IP PIN, you won’t need it for filing.

→ Who gets an IP PIN?
✔ Taxpayers whose identities have been stolen (automatically issued by the IRS)
✔ Those who voluntarily apply for one through the IRS

USCPA Sophie Luo (羅霞) reminds you that once you receive an IP PIN, the IRS generates a new one every year (valid for one year). Remember to enter your IP PIN correctly when filing your taxes.
