Preparing for Retirement? Essential 2026 IRS Guide on How Retirement Affects Your Taxes!

Retirement is more than an exciting lifestyle milestone—it also ushers in a new chapter of financial management and tax planning.

Transitioning into retirement is more than just an exciting lifestyle milestone—it also marks a brand-new phase in tax planning! The IRS reminds taxpayers preparing for or entering retirement that post-retirement income streams are taxed very differently from traditional wage earnings. Understanding these rules early is crucial to preserving your hard-earned nest egg.

Key Tax Considerations for Retirees

  • Taxability of Social Security Benefits: Social Security isn't automatically tax-free! Depending on your "combined income" thresholds, up to 85% of your benefits may be subject to federal income tax.
  • Retirement Account Withdrawals: Distributions from traditional 401(k)s and traditional IRAs are generally taxed as ordinary income, while qualified distributions from Roth accounts remain tax-free.
  • Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): Once you reach the statutory age (generally age 73), you must begin taking minimum withdrawals from traditional retirement plans. Failing to take an RMD can result in hefty excise tax penalties.
  • Post-Retirement Work & Consulting: If you consult, freelance, or start a small business after retirement, that income may be subject to self-employment tax and require quarterly estimated tax payments.
  • Adjusting Withholding & Estimated Taxes: Without an employer managing wage withholding, retirees can choose to have tax withheld from pensions/annuities using Form W-4P or W-4R, or make quarterly estimated payments to avoid underpayment penalties.
